U20WWC: African nations discover group-stage opponents after draws conclude in Poland

The draws for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup (WWC) in Poland have concluded, with all four participating African countries discovering their group-stage opponents ahead of the highly anticipated competition.

The draw ceremony was held on Friday, in Lodz, Poland. The global tournament is set to kick off on September 5, featuring 24 countries from across the globe divided into six groups of four.

Representatives from Africa, Europe, Asia, North and South America, and Oceania were present as nations mapped out their path to the final.

Tough test all around

The Black Princesses of Ghana will be hoping to navigate a tricky Group C, where they have been drawn alongside powerhouse France, the Korea Republic, and Ecuador.

Meanwhile, the Falconets of Nigeria, Africa’s most successful side in the tournament’s history, were placed in Group F. They will face former champions Spain, China PR, and New Caledonia in what many observers describe as a balanced but competitive group.

Debutants handed challenging starts

Tournament debutants Benin face a daunting first appearance on the world stage after being drawn in Group A alongside hosts Poland, Mexico, and Argentina. Benin will have the honor of opening their campaign against the host nation.

Another debutant, Tanzania, was handed arguably the toughest draw of the African representatives. They have been placed in Group B with footballing giants Brazil, England, and Canada.

The 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup is scheduled to take place from September 5 to September 27, 2026. Matches will be hosted across four Polish cities: Bielsko-Biała, Katowice, Łódź, and Sosnowiec.

‘Great privilege and blessing’: Ackers praises Le Roux and Gans ahead of milestones

Bulls head coach Johan Ackermann spoke highly of backline players Willie le Roux and Stedman Gans, who will each bring up milestones against Benetton on Saturday.

The teams meet at Loftus Versfeld at 4pm in the final United Rugby Championship league phase round of the season.

The Bulls are expected to win their sixth match in a row against Benetton to either hold onto fourth spot on the table, or move up to third or even second if the Stormers lose away to Cardiff or Leinster slip up at home against the Ospreys.

A finish in the top four means they will host a quarter-final. Ending higher than that could mean a home semi-final or final against any team below them.

Le Roux’s lauded

Ackermann warned that the Bulls could not underestimate the quality Italian side with a “nothing to lose” attitude. Especially after wins against Leinster, Cardiff and Lyon in recent weeks.

After naming his strongest possible team, Ackermann lauded fullback Le Roux, who will play his 400th first-class rugby match, and Gans, who will make his 100th appearance for the Bulls across all competitions.

Springbok veteran Le Roux, at 36, has had a long and prodigious career in rugby, culminating in his 100th Test match for the Springboks last season.

He’s played for the Boland Cavaliers, Griquas, Cheetahs, Sharks, Wasps, Toyota Verblitz and Bulls.

Ackermann described the utility back’s milestone as a “great privilege and blessing”.

“I don’t know if he [Le Roux] realises what a great achievement it is to play that amount of rugby and be so fortunate, because it means you did not have lots of injuries,” the Bulls coach said.

“That’s a great milestone, to play 400 first-class matches. It’s a great career and may it continue.”

Bulls coach praises Gans’ character

Gans, 29, has played for no union other than the Bulls, though he had a short stint with the Blitzboks and even won the SA Sevens Player of the Year award in 2020.

This week, he told the media he felt blessed to reach the milestone. Coming from the town of Vredenburg in the Western Cape, he said he grew up with many talented boys who would have also taken the opportunity to play rugby that he received when his family moved to Pretoria.

His coach said, “It’s my first year working with him and what a team man. He’s a guy who lifts the team, always gives his best for the team.

“He’s willing to learn, very coachable, and willing to adapt. If you ask him to do something different, he is willing to buy into that plan.”

He said Gans’ ability to move from outside to inside centre and cover wing this season has made him a valuable player.

“But the biggest thing is he shows perseverance to push through a number of coaches to get to that 100 mark. I can see why, because he is a great team man and a great person on and off the field.”

Man City battle ‘fatigue’ ahead of FA Cup final clash with troubled Chelsea

Pep Guardiola hopes Manchester City can overcome mounting fatigue in Saturday’s FA Cup final as Chelsea aim to salvage a turbulent season by ending their domestic trophy drought.

Guardiola’s side are embroiled in a last-ditch bid to catch Premier League leaders Arsenal, but their slender title hopes will be on hold this weekend as they head to Wembley in search of a cup double.

City, who beat Arsenal in the League Cup final in March, had to play Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Wednesday and they will be back in top-flight action just three days after facing Chelsea when they head to Bournemouth.

Although Guardiola made six changes for a 3-0 win against Palace that left them two points behind Arsenal with two games left, the City boss is concerned his team’s gruelling fixture schedule could hand Chelsea an advantage in the final.

“After the FA Cup, it is Bournemouth, we play every three days. Chelsea have a week at home training, preparing the final,” he said.

“We have to travel to London. They will be at home with their wife and kids. So that is fatigue and fatigue and fatigue.”

Guardiola tried to alleviate the physical toll by starting with Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki and Jeremy Doku on the bench against Palace.

“I have full confidence in all the squad, including the ones that didn’t play against Palace. They are so good,” Guardiola said.

“I thought we needed more energy. Savinho, Antoine (Semenyo) and Omar (Marmoush) were really good. Now we rest and focus on the final.”

City are appearing in the FA Cup final for a record fourth successive season, but they lost the last two, against Crystal Palace in 2025 and Manchester United two years ago.

Guardiola has won the FA Cup twice, in 2019 and 2023, and a third triumph in the competition would seal his 20th trophy since arriving at City a decade ago.

– Chaotic period –

Uncertainty has swirled around Guardiola’s future all season and, with just one year left on his contract, he is yet to give an indication if he plans to stay or go at the end of this term.

For now, the 55-year-old is looking forward to one more trip to Wembley.

“It is a pleasure to go to the cathedral of English football to play the final,” he said.

“Hopefully the result will be better than the last two times.”

Guardiola’s glittering array of trophies and vast experience are a stark contrast to Chelsea’s novice interim boss Calum McFarlane.

McFarlane took over following Liam Rosenior’s sacking in April after just 106 days in charge.

The former Chelsea under-21 coach finds himself in the extraordinary position of leading the Blues in the FA Cup final with no realistic prospect of landing the job on a full-time basis.

It is the second time McFarlane has been in interim charge this season. After Enzo Maresca’s exit in January, he damaged City’s title challenge in a 1-1 draw at the Etihad.

The managerial turnover at Chelsea is emblematic of the troubled club’s chaotic period since owners BlueCo took over from Roman Abramovich in 2022.

Chelsea are without a win in their last seven league games, a dismal streak that has left them with virtually no chance of qualifying for the Champions League.

Winning the FA Cup for the first time since 2018 — in the process ending eight years without a domestic trophy — would only partially salve the wounds of such a traumatic campaign.
